Changes at Saturday Books

We’ve extended our opening hours. Fountain Arcade, being shared by traders, does not permit Sunday opening, nor Bank Holidays. So we will do what we can with the rest. Ten till four is the default, the exception being Wednesday, when Dudley’s traditional half-day closing is observed.

Also, we’re no longer doing ‘book bundles’ and, for the most part, our out-of-print books are no longer on display in the shop. They’re for sale via AbeBooks – or brought down from our upstairs storeroom in the bookshop itself, if requested.

Meanwhile, we’ve greatly increased our stock of books published in the last three years or so. Some of our recent additions are shown in the photo below.

Lit Crit

The subjects of our latest reviews are This Is All You Left Me With, a collection of poems by Ozzy Welch, who was raised in Halesowen, and The Bus Driver’s Son, a novel for young adults by Sukvinder Grewal, who is from Dudley.

Kids’ Corner

Children’s Area

For years, a Children’s Area has been part of the grander aims of the bookshop, but this didn’t prove possible until we moved to our new home in the Fountain Arcade.

Now we have a garden-themed corner, with table, chairs and lawn-representing mat. There are drawing and colouring materials at hand, along with picture-orientated large-format books. Further afield all primary school-aged readers have their shelves, with used book starting at £1.00, rising to £5.99 and above if new. Spanning out, the full Saturday Books collection is on view, where parents may take time to browse and buy as their children absorb themselves in reading and other activities.

A sunny spot and safe situation in which to enter the literary world, to become a reader, to have your life shaped by the books you read, in ways all good. Through continual purchase of new books that interest and delight children, this is what the Children’s Area aims to be.

Saturday Books is headed up by Francis, bookshop proprietor, who is supported by a dedicated team of fellow bibliophiles.

We’re committed to constantly improving our bookshop and we’re always keen to hear our customers’ views – either in person when you visit or via a message.

Local Writers

We stock books by authors and poets from across the West Midlands. We specialise in self-published works and books from small, independent publishers.

Poetry, fiction and non-fiction

We welcome regional authors

Saturday Books aims to promote writing in the West Midlands, from a view that our region – through its high degree of diversity, unique history and present drive towards ultra-modernity – has an emerging voice, or collection of voices that are rooted in the same landscape.

We therefore welcome contact with regional writers whose writing contains something of the conditions of life here in the West Midlands.

We have established an invoicing process through the Booksellers Association so that authors/publishers will be paid within a month of a sale taking place.

Saturday Books offers both bricks-and-mortar bookshop and dedicated local authors’ website for marketing writers’ work. In the case of the website, each book that is posted as for sale will carry a review/recommendation by Saturday Books’ staff or associates. Those who search online for new regional voices are thus guided to the choices they make.

If you’d like to sell through Saturday Books, please write to us.
